Sarah + Ian! >> Whimsical + Intimate Backyard Wedding (Rochester, MN)
This is going to be the blog that convinces you to host a simple and sweet backyard wedding, I just know it.
(It’s also going to make you want to hire all the all-star vendors that contributed. I know this too, for I know them to be the best.)
Before Covid made them cool and often necessary, I have long loved a backyard soiree.
For while I’m all about the gorgeous details and portrait potential, my first real love is for the stories. The real stuff. The moments you can’t plan for. The people you get to know through the day’s observation. The little things that feel big, growing more so in the years to come, when you reflect on what a wedding day is truly made of and how it felt.
And with a guest list under a dozen, a setting that already holds so much sentiment, and a timeline relaxed enough to allow for spontaneity, Sarah and Ian’s wedding was full of stories.
Which means I absolutely loved Sarah and Ian’s wedding.
Some of my favorite stories:
Everyone’s handheld fan working to cool each other instead of themselves. A dad’s dream to see a child married in the backyard realized. The suburban (and comical) disruptions of lawn mowers, garbage trucks, and delivery people the minute you’re about to begin the ceremony. Time for Xbox. A Hamilton style toast. DIY bartending that turns out alright (if albeit too strong) in the end. Hilarious stories of Grandma gracing the dinner table between speeches. Lots of Mamma Mia on the microphone. A personal parade with champagne and macarons—a “drive-through reception”—and a chance to connect with family friends. A mom that turns up on the dance floor for Toxic by Britney Spears, and a brother who robots like none other.
It was absolutely my kind of wedding, and an experience I feel honored to have shared.
Congrats, S+I!
Vendor love!
